5 packing and moving tips

Over the last decade I have moved around seven times and guess what I am exhausted by it. Moving house can be one of the most stressful days of your life, but we have put together 5 packing and moving tips to help your move go as smoothly as possible!

1. Get Organised

There are so many things little to remember to do when moving house such as connecting/disconnecting utilities & mail redirection so use a moving checklist to keep track of them all. You can even go a step further by printing out all of your documents relating to the move such as your lease & removalist’s details and put them altogether together in a folder. This way if anything goes wrong on the day you won’t be scrambling around trying to find important details.

2. Start Fresh

Now is the perfect time to start going through all your things and get rid of anything you no longer need or want. If it’s in good condition either donate it to charity or sell it online or at the markets otherwise throw it out.

By doing this, you’ll save time packing and save money with your removalists, it’s a win-win situation!

3. Pack the Essentials

There is nothing worse than getting to your new home and discovering you don’t have essentials like toilet paper and hand soap. To avoid this, pack yourself an essentials box full of everything you might straight away such as a couple of plates and cups, coffee, kettle, toilet paper, paper towel and don’t forget some snacks to fuel you throughout the day.

Also pack yourself an overnight back with some toiletries, change of clothes, pyjamas, chargers and anything else you might need on your first night. After your move, you are going to want a shower and this will save you having to search through all your boxes to find things.

Make sure you bring your essentials box, overnight bag and any bedding with you in your car so you know exactly where it is.

4. Hire Professionals

While it might seem tempting to hire the cheapest removalists you can find, often it ends up costing you more as they will take longer to move your items. Look for experienced, professional removalists who have good reviews from previous customers, your moving day will go much more smoothly if you have good movers.

Book your removalists as soon as you know your moving date to ensure you can get the day you want.

5. Book a Sitter

If you have younger kids or pets, book a sitter to look after them during the move. Moving can be very stressful on them and you don’t want to be worried about them wandering away as your doors will be open while the movers are there.
