CATS is one of the longest running shows in the West End and Broadway history.
Cats premiered in 1981 where it played for 21 record-breaking years over almost 9,000 performances.
Cats has made its stunning debut down under featuring Australian sweetheart Delta Goodrem playing Grizabella.
Shamelessly, I thought Andrew Lloyd Webber was a made up character from The Nanny. Little did I know that he was a composer of many theatre shows such as The Phantom of the Opera, Love Never Dies, and Evita, just to name a few.
I was thrilled to attend Cats: The Musical at Melbourne’s iconic Regent Theatre. As I have never been to a musical I was really looking forward to seeing Cats on the big stage! If you know me, you know I am the crazy cat-lady.
Unfortunately, due to an end of year Christmas party, I was running 30 minutes late. I was kindly walked into the theatre by the lovely staff at the Regent and taken to my seat. It was so wonderful to be welcomed by singing and dancing from the get go.
However, I was quite taken aback when a woman beside me called me disruptive for simply taking my seat. She clearly wasn’t in the Christmas spirit.
Delta played Grizabella as mentioned earlier, who was a former glamour cat who has lost her sparkle and now wants to be accepted.
I had heard so much about Delta’s rendition of Memory and I won’t lie, it was so beautiful I teared up.
At times it was hard to keep up with all of the characters on stage, as the cats were all over it! The makeup and costumes were amazing along with the storyline even though I had missed the first 30 minutes.
I was in awe of the theatre, the clapping at the end of each performance and the atmosphere.
It’s a performance I will always remember and hope to see again somewhere in the world without certain catty audience members.
